What Is God Asking Of Me?

We usually ask God for things. A few posts ago, I advocated for asking God and being persistent. We also have to remember that we are asked by God to serve and we all have gifts that facilitate that service. I have a strong belief that we were created to serve, being stewards of God while we are here on earth. For some of us that may be direct acts of service, while others it may be evangelization, and others it may be just words of encouragement and gratitude. Whatever it is, I think God made it pretty clear when he washed the disciples feet. He demonstrated how we are to be the servant not the master.

This may go against our thinking and very nature, as it’s always nice to be waited on, have someone do something for you instead of you doing for them. While it’s not meant as demeaning, being a servant is sometimes regarded as second when it should be first. Certainly, in prior times in history, being a servant did mean you were second class, and unfortunately, that still goes on in some parts of the world. But Jesus also made it a point in another instance when the disciples were arguing about who was the greatest (there’s that arrogance and pride again!) “… For whoever is the least among all of you, he is the greatest.” (Lk 9:46)

Then there’s another passage where Jesus is referring to the religious leaders. “And whosoever shall exalt himself shall be humbled; and whosoever shall humble himself shall be exalted.” (Mt 23:12) We are challenged to pass the test and not glorify ourselves but instead seek to be of service to others. What gifts do you have? What way’s have you helped others? This is not to say the point of helping others is to humble yourself and make yourself feel lowly. The point is in the action. We are to use our gifts talents and treasures to be of service because that’s what you do. I forget where I read or heard this, but the best way to do a good deed is doing it for someone that in no way can repay you.

I pray often for direction in my vocation. Sometimes, like many of you I’m sure, feel lost in purpose. What AM I supposed to be doing? What ARE my gifts? Sometimes I just feel average. But that is not God speaking. We all have some specialty but it may not FEEL unique or extravagant. It may be an everyday thing. The way you smile and thank the person who gave you your morning coffee. The way you greet your children when you come home and spend some time with them before bed. The way you carry yourself, what message you send to others by your voice and facial expression that inspires them to do the same. When I pray about this I use this simple prayer. Maybe you can find meaning in it as well.

Lord, I want to be happy in this life and spend eternity with You in the life to come. From the first moment of my existence, You knew my vocation. Please help me discover Your plan for my life. Help me to know myself. Help me to overcome my fears. Help me to want what You want. Help me to trust You completely. Send Your Holy Spirit into my mind and heart so I can see the gifts You have given me and hear Your call to serve the Church. Increase my desire to bring others to You and to help them reach heaven. Mary Most Holy, Mother of God, pray for me, that I can discover my vocation and have the courage to respond in faith. Amen.
