We’re not perfect. This isn’t new and we’re taught throughout life that we often fall short of expectations, whether our own or others. We also know that despite being made in God’s image, He is perfect but we are not. And that’s okay. We have our shortcomings, our flaws, pains and sufferings. But like our strengths, our weaknesses make us who we are. We are perfect in our imperfections.
And that’s okay. It’s okay to not be everything to everyone every day. To be honest, that aspiration is exhausting. We also come to know through life’s journey that we can’t make everyone happy. So to strive for the above is somewhat setting us up for failure. But we’re not exactly off the hook either. Just because we’re not perfect doesn’t mean we can just keep living a mediocre life and settle for where we are. That type of cynicism can get you into a lot of trouble.
So what do we do?? We’re not perfect but we have to try anyway? Yes. In a way. God gives us gifts and resources to help us on our path to perfection. We can only get to perfection through these. From Paul, “But he said to me, “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.” Therefore I will boast all the more gladly about my weaknesses, so that Christ’s power may rest on me.” (2 Cor 12:9) We won’t get until we reach heaven. Until then, we can live a life for others, seeking God’s face in each day and doing our best to smile despite the pain, keep our head up despite the failure, and take one step forward, even when it’s uphill.
And we will fail. We won’t live up to God’s vision for us because we can’t be perfect. But it’s the consistent movement forward that makes the difference. God knows this. He wasn’t us to know that He still loves us because it’s about the effort not the results. So we just need to try. We can do all things through Christ.
